The Kulia Marine Science Club is a free after-school program located at the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology in Kane'ohe Bay.  This program is intended for 9th-12th grade students in the Windward Oahu area.  Participants will learn marine science research techniques and the ecology of Kane'ohe Bay through hands-on training, in-water activities, and excursions to other Windward sites.

Activities include:
  • Training in marine biology and marine science research techniques
  • Snorkeling exploration of Coconut Island's marine environment with certified lifeguards
  • Identifying marine vertebrates and invertebrates
  • An overnight camp-out at the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology
  • Connecting with peers, marine science students, and researchers
  • Participation in the first year of a long-term Smithsonian reef assessment survey
Who:  Students attending Windward Oahu high schools.  Participants should be able to swim and be interested in marine science. 
When: Wednesdays, 2:30 pm to 5:00 pm
Dates: October 19, 2016 to May 9, 2017 (excluding holidays and school breaks)

Transportation:  Students should be dropped off at our street address, or arrive at the Windward Mall where they can be picked up by our shuttle van.
Enrollment:  Space is limited, so interested students are required to apply by completing the following steps:

  3. Print the waiver forms located at https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B7v29WD7f-yqWXF0MVRoZVR5Z28/view?usp=sharing
  4. Have a parent / guardian sign the Teacher Reference Report and the waiver forms.
  5. Have any teacher or counselor complete the Teacher Reference Report.
  6. Signed waiver forms may be emailed, faxed, mailed, or brought with you for your first Kulia Marine Science Club meeting.
