On Friday evening, August 8, Jo-Ann Leong, the faculty and staff of HIMB hosted a visit at Coconut Island by the Polynesian Voyaging Society canoe Hokulea. Nainoa Thompson and his crew arrived at 5:45 pm, docking at the Marine Mammal Research Program pier. After opening remarks by Jo-Ann and Nainoa the crew joined about 50 Coconut Islanders and SOEST Dean Brian Taylor for dinner in the Pauley Classroom. The partnership of the University and PVS continues to educate the broader Hawaii public and world populations about marine research, preserving the Hawaiian culture and caring for the environment.
The crew of the Hokulea enjoyed learning about the research at HIMB and the staff at HIMB was delighted to learn of the canoe's adventures and accomplishments. Almost all of the HIMB staff present had an opportunity to board the vessel and learn something about wayfaring or sailing by non-instrument navigation.
This event was part of a training cruise for the Hokulea as it prepares for a voyage around the world. We look forward to Nainoa and crew coming back in October to give a seminar.
