Volunteer for the Science Olympiad!

Aloha friends and colleagues,

Now that registration for the 2011 Science Olympiad has closed we are turning our attention to preparing for 4 awesome regional tournaments and our 7th annual Statewide Tournament. The Hawai‘i State Science Olympiad is looking for enthusiastic people from all facets of science, technology, engineering, and math to help us run events at our tournament. Science Olympiad tournaments are hands-on events for middle and high school students. They challenge and inspire students in a very wide range of disciplines including astronomy, biology, chemistry, engineering, forensics, genetics, medicine, physics, rocketry, and zoology.

We have only three requirements for folks who want to help make Science Olympiad tournament successful:
1) You have to love science!
2) You have to love working with students!
3) You have to love sharing your passion for science with students!

If you meet this rigorous criteria please consider volunteering to help at one or more of our tournaments. Here are the dates, locations and contacts:
• Kauai Regional Tournament - Kauai Community College - Monday, January 17, 2011 - Lenda Helser (lenda@lava.net)
• Maui Regional Tournament - UH-Maui College - Saturday, January 29, 2011 - Flaviana Ancheta (anchetaflavi001@hawaii.rr.com)
• Leeward Regional Tournament - Leeward Community College - Saturday, February 5, 2011 - Helmut Kae (helmut@hawaii.edu)
• Windward Regional Tournament - Windward Community College - Monday, February 21, 2011 - Dave Krupp (krupp@hawaii.edu)
• 7th Annual Statewide Tournament - Leeward Community College - Saturday, March 5, 2011 - Brad Ashburn (bashburn@hawaii.edu)

We are VERY excited about this year's tournaments. Not only do we have more tournaments this year than ever before...we have more teams than ever before too! This year there will be 47 teams (which equates to almost 1000 students and teachers) participating in the Science Olympiad. That's just over twice as many as in 2010!

Please get in touch with one or more of the tournaments directors to help us make this year a truly amazing year for the hundreds of students that will be participating.

As always, if you have any questions, comments, or concerns please do not hesitate to email me at allaire@hawaii.edu or at hisciolympiad@gmail.com.

Aloha!
Franklin Allaire
